231 Now

What is the first thing most kids do after graduating high school? They go to college. Well now, thanks to our lovely little government officials that will be even harder for a lot of kids to do. I just got a letter in the mail the other day that I'm sure upset as many other students as it did me. Now, normally I don't care what kind of mail I get as long as it doesn't say "balance due" on the inside. But, I would have taken ten of those letters compared to this one I just got.

The letter was from my college. It turns out that I am losing about $2,000 this year. Who knows how much this will mean I'll lose in years to come. The letter informed me that Michigan has stopped giving out their Michigan Merit Promise Scholarship which was previously known as the MEAP scholarship. The way it works, you had to take a MEAP test in high school. If you got all ones and twos then you qualified for MME scholarship money. Well Michigan has decided to take back that promise and I can't be more angry. I have three jobs so I can afford school. I was really counting on that money and now I don't know what I'll do. It is very upsetting to know that I along with many others worked so hard to get good grades and to be prepared for that test when it was all for nothing.

In a time when we need kids to go to college and get degrees, this government is sure doing anything they can to stop the process. Somewhere something has to be done, and it has to be done now. Otherwise, we'll hit strike three and the next industry to go bankrupt will be colleges.

Thank Governor Granholm for that one. After being in office for 7 years now, she has done very little to cut government waste in our State. She has spent like a drunken sailor. An example is new State Police post that the State Police neither wanted nor needed. But one of her friends and political allies who will own the building will reap the benefit of leasing the building to the State. Another example would be her unwillingness to privatize much of State government, particularly the Department of Corrections, thereby protecting her Union friends jobs and excessive salaries. It's no wonder the State can't afford to help kids with college expenses. It's also a shame.
