Parents always say annoying things that some how stick with you. One of my moms favorite is "Ye of little faith". Well mom... I fit into that label pretty good.
I'm sure everyone who is in my boat-- all 96,000 of us, know that the promise scholarship was vetoed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. What a shocker! I for one was holding out on the off chance that maybe she would save it. But nope, that was not on her agenda. She can defend her choice claiming it was hard and she didn't want to do it all sh…

With the way the economy is many qualified candidates do not get the job simply because they "know too much". This is happening with teachers a lot. Those who have a masters or a Ph.d get looked over because it would cost the school too much to pay them. Instead, those with a certificate get the job. This is a shame because those with the degrees are the very people we need teaching!
Coming from a student who has been in this situation more than once- it is very frustrating when you pay for a c…

Maybe I'm being an over protective big sister-- but maybe, just maybe I have a point.
I've wrote about my brother before in the "working harder for minimum wage" blog. So the news that he gets treated like crap at his job isn't really that new. But this is new: my brother just turned 18. Great right? He finally gets minimum wage! But does he get the same rights? Of course not.
My brother has been working for this business for well over a year. He started when he was 16 I believe. He never made…

Okay, so a common thing I talk about is college and its costs. But, hey, I'm a college student making just a bit more than minimum wage. What can I say, its on my mind a lot.
The fall term is starting soon, Sept. 8 to be exact. I am dreading the thought of handing over the check for my text books. Usually, I go to the library and find out what I need and then order those books off of amazon. However-- amazon does not always have what I need, or they can't get it to me in time (and of course, th…

The absolutely worst day of the week is Monday. It is the start of a new work week and for me- it's always the hardest alarm to get up to. Just about everything that could have went wrong this morning did. The dog got loose and just had to run a marathon down the street, the shower water never got warm, my car decided it didn't feel like starting, and to top it off-- breakfast is still sitting on the kitchen counter.
We've all gone through days like this I'm sure. It gives a bad start to what f…

Every summer the "fudgies" as we call them come up. While the local businesses enjoy them- I do not. I never have. They make shopping districts crowded and the roads dangerous. Fudgies are known for being terrible drivers (at least to me they are), but this summer they are really bad! I mean hello people- they don't just put a turning lane in the middle of the road for something to look at.
Some of them tailgate to the point where I'm ready to just hit my breaks and let them hit me so they then…

One thing I hate is when people take advantage of others. My younger brother is almost 18. He has been working at the same place for over a year. I don't believe he even makes minimum wage yet. Their excuse? They do not have to pay a minor minimum wage. This is a bunch of crap. He works so darn hard for that business and they just use him. My brother works almost 35 hours a week, every week- as a service clerk. I just think it's wrong the way he is treated. They love him there. He works hard and…

What is the first thing most kids do after graduating high school? They go to college. Well now, thanks to our lovely little government officials that will be even harder for a lot of kids to do. I just got a letter in the mail the other day that I'm sure upset as many other students as it did me. Now, normally I don't care what kind of mail I get as long as it doesn't say "balance due" on the inside. But, I would have taken ten of those letters compared to this one I just got.
The letter was f…

Anyone notice how many pot holes are showing up all over the place? And not just little ones, they're so big you feel like your car just hit a tree or something. That, or you'll loose a tire for sure. I know everyone just says slow down and it wont be a problem. Well it's still a problem. Some roads are so bad you're better driving down the center of the road and over the yellow line than you are going slower. They say they fix them when they fill them in with tar and gravel-- but really, it's j…

I have been hearing about a lot of theft that involves stolen art work lately. This is so out of the ordinary I don't know what to think. Stealing art work? I mean really, what are those who steal it going to do? It's not like they can re-sell it without being caught. They must have really "just had to have it" for their living room wall I guess.
I'm not sure who is to blame in this one... the poor economy for driving someone to steal? The lack of security at the art gallery? Or was it the lack…

Usually, I love living in Michigan. We experience all four seasons here. Some days its really hot and others it's so cold and you have to go exploring in the middle of winter to find your car (which if you are like me is buried under some mountain of snow because you forgot to park it in the garage). But- lately things have gotten very annoying to say the least. We've been having hot days- perfect weather for T-shirts and shorts. Then... the very next day it is so cold you have to find your warm…

Being young means there are many new things to try. There are also many responsibilities to say hello to.
Being young also means paying for everything that comes after graduation. In high school we are so sheltered. There is no life skills course that teaches you how to succeed. Lets face it, there are only so many ways you can divide five bucks between 10 bills.
After school, we are told we need to go to college for yet more school. But for what? To waste money and spend decades in debt the s…
