As a former student who still has seemingly insurmountable loans, I feel for you. I can offer this advice - get ready for more broken promises. Younger generations are on the receiving end of so many of them.

Okay, so a common thing I talk about is college and its costs. But, hey, I'm a college student making just a bit more than minimum wage. What can I say, its on my mind a lot. The fall term is starting soon, Sept. 8 to be exact. I am dreading the ...

I am not from Northern Michigan but I have spent my summer growing up Petoskey. I have worked here during the last summer and I can say that even with tourist here, the driving is better than a major city. Back in the Detroit area (were I am from)...

Certainly the traffic is an issue. However, I can’t entirely blame tourist driving habits. Locals can drive irresponsibly as well. I try to remain patient and level headed in traffic. A humbling experience to remember, when we go elsewhere on vaca...

I agree that often "fudgies" can be anoying, but they certainly do boost our economy and we need them. For many businesses, those fudgies pay our salaries. I was a business owner for a few years, and if it weren't for the fudgies I would not have ...

The "fudgies" are an important part to this economy and help provide a job to you. As for the driving, I have found it is not just the out-of-towners that drive insane. My advice, tough it out and know the roads will not be this crowded in October.

Every summer the "fudgies" as we call them come up. While the local businesses enjoy them- I do not. I never have. They make shopping districts crowded and the roads dangerous. Fudgies are known for being terrible drivers (at least to me they are)...

Ye of Little Faith

Parents always say annoying things that some how stick with you. One of my moms favorite is "Ye of little faith". Well mom... I fit into that label pretty good.

I'm sure everyone who is in my boat-- all 96,000 of us, know that the promise scholarship was vetoed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. What a shocker! I for one was holding out on the off chance that maybe she would save it. But nope, that was not on her agenda. She can defend her choice claiming it was hard and she didn't want to do it all sh… Continue

Paying More for Less

With the way the economy is many qualified candidates do not get the job simply because they "know too much". This is happening with teachers a lot. Those who have a masters or a Ph.d get looked over because it would cost the school too much to pay them. Instead, those with a certificate get the job. This is a shame because those with the degrees are the very people we need teaching!

Coming from a student who has been in this situation more than once- it is very frustrating when you pay for a c… Continue

It just keeps getting better...

Maybe I'm being an over protective big sister-- but maybe, just maybe I have a point.

I've wrote about my brother before in the "working harder for minimum wage" blog. So the news that he gets treated like crap at his job isn't really that new. But this is new: my brother just turned 18. Great right? He finally gets minimum wage! But does he get the same rights? Of course not.

My brother has been working for this business for well over a year. He started when he was 16 I believe. He never made… Continue

They say it pays to be educated... When was the last time "they" looked at the bill?

Okay, so a common thing I talk about is college and its costs. But, hey, I'm a college student making just a bit more than minimum wage. What can I say, its on my mind a lot.

The fall term is starting soon, Sept. 8 to be exact. I am dreading the thought of handing over the check for my text books. Usually, I go to the library and find out what I need and then order those books off of amazon. However-- amazon does not always have what I need, or they can't get it to me in time (and of course, th… Continue

Sleepy Days

The absolutely worst day of the week is Monday. It is the start of a new work week and for me- it's always the hardest alarm to get up to. Just about everything that could have went wrong this morning did. The dog got loose and just had to run a marathon down the street, the shower water never got warm, my car decided it didn't feel like starting, and to top it off-- breakfast is still sitting on the kitchen counter.

We've all gone through days like this I'm sure. It gives a bad start to what f… Continue
